| Saturday 16 June saw the Cumbria U15 Girls basketball team travel to the National Inter Association finals, held at Nottingham Trent University where they would face 6 other regions. Injury problems struck 4 days before the tournament when Katherine Collings was ruled out with damaged knee ligaments. With the team now down to just 7 players one of the youngest members, Jessica Bayliff, stepped up to the mark to bolster the squad.
After a 6am start and a 4 hour bus journey, the girls found themselves drawn against Newham, representing London and the South East in their first match of the day. The Cumbria girls started a little slowly but still retained control in the early exchanges. Newham drew first blood but their lead was to be short lived as Sophie Pearson, Rachel Kerr and Katie Smith all found their way onto the score sheet early on. With Cumbria playing an impressive full court press, they forced Newham into several turnovers and made the most of the extra possession, adding points through Emily Jackson and Rosie Cavanagh. At the break, the Cumbria girls were well in control with the score line at 33 |
